Adolescents Portrays
Gender socialization begins in the family and continues in the school and community. The media has a major negative impact. A significant amount of advertising directed at children and adolescents portrays stereotypical gender relationships. (CICH, 2000) A report by Status of Women Canada (Graydon, 1997) noted: “By the time children reach puberty, they are so heavily targeted by advertisers and by media, and so preoccupied with issues relating to body image, sexual identify, belonging and peer pressure, that it’s much harder to get them to step back and be critical of popular culture.”
