The theory is that once you distance yourself from your phobia, you will be free of it forever. In NLP therapy, a professional might help you to relax and visualize a time when you felt completely relaxed and at ease. You would be taught to “play the movie” of this experience and enjoy all its emotions in you mind. Then the therapist would “anchor” this experience in your subconscious by touching you on your arm or leg. Next,you would play the movie of the earliest memory you have of feeling afraid of the situation you fear. The therapist would then tough your arm to release the good feelings that were anchored in, and the physical symptoms of fear that you normally experience when thinking of your phobic situation would be gone.
