The Learning Goal
Through my visits for the Phobia centers, I have become acquainted will Bill Evans, the American Airlines pilot who had helped psychologists Jim Wilson and Robert Ingram teach many people how to get over their fear of flying. The psychologists teach the fear stopping tools. Bill’s job is to teach clients all about flying: aerodynamics, why a plane cannot simply fall out of the sky, what all the mysterious noises are, and the many fine instruments pilots use to overcome bad weather conditions. Most people who are afraid of flying admit that their real fear is not that the plane will crash. They are afraid that they themselves because their irrational fear symptoms are so overpowering. Why , then , should Bill Evans teach them the complexities of aerodynamics and answer questions that range from “What if the turbulence gets too bad and I’m thrown up against the ceiling?” to “What if the engines all stop working?”
